Otho F. Evans, 83, passed away December 15, 2010. He was born in Independence Springs, TX, on Feb. 17, 1927, to Claytie Bell Huchingson Evans and Arvey Evans. His mother died in Refugio when he was 16, and the family moved to Taft. Otho played football there and still has his varsity jacket. He graduated from Taft High School in 1945. He married Frances Morris at the parsonage of the First Baptist Church in Taft, TX on April 10, 1948. They had four children, all of whom they raised in the church. Otho truly loved the Lord. He had a beautiful tenor voice and sang in the church choir for many years, often singing solos for Sunday morning services. He was a self-taught guitar player and loved to make music, especially with his brother and father, both of whom played guitar and harmonica.
He worked for Eastern Seed Company for 30 years. During those years, he also became a licensed real estate broker. Upon his retirement, they purchased five acres in Gonzales, TX and lived there for 14 years before returning to the Coast.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Otis and Curtis Evans.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Frances Evans, and his four children: Jeffrey Scott Evans (Linda) of Taft, TX, Otho F. Evans, Jr. (Kim) of Spring, TX, Shelby Susanne O’Brien and Frances Elizabeth Melder (Rick), both of Corpus Christi, TX; seven grandchildren and two great grandsons.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 18, 2010 at 10:30 AM, at Colonial Funeral Home in Taft. Burial will follow the service at The Palms Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Portland. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
