William “Bill” Hawley of High Point died Saturday, January 1, 2010. He was born January 1, 1924 to Bennett Alexander and Beulah Owen Hawley in Richmond, VA. He was predeceased by two brothers, who died in their youth, and his older brother, Bert of Salisbury, NC, who died December 10, 2010. He is survived by his younger brother, Darwin and his wife Helen, of Greensboro, NC. Bill is also survived by his wife of 56 years, Martha Faison Hawley; children Ellen Hawley Foster and husband Tom of High Point, Liza Hawley of Philadelphia, PA, and Faison Hawley and wife Lisa of High Point; by four grandchildren Cameron Foster Deese and husband Chad and stepson Trystan, Kathryn Foster, Olivia Hawley and Sam Hawley, and a sister-in-law, Jane Faison of High Point, and nieces and nephews.
Following Bill’s service in the U. S. Army during World War II in France and England, he received his Bachelor of Architecture from NC State College. He and Martha settled in High Point in 1959 after he worked four years for Skidmore, Owings and Merrill in Chicago, IL and Colorado Springs, CO, during the design and construction of the US Air Force Academy. Bill was a partner with Freeman Associates and headed the design department, designing many local buildings including the High Point Courthouse, Jail and Public Health Building; several dorms at Appalachian State University; the first Health Sciences Building at East Carolina University; the Mossman Administration Building at UNC-Greensboro; and the design for the development of Bald Head Island, NC. He served many years on the board of Habitat for Humanity and produced several designs for Habitat homes. He also served as chairman of the High Point Planning and Zoning Commission and delivered mobile meals for many years.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, January 5th at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church at 918 N. Main Street in High Point, NC. The family will greet friends after the service in the Family Life Center.
