Betty L. Alloway (nee Allen) of Kansas City, MO died Tuesday, January 11, 2011. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Curtis H. Alloway and three children: Patricia Clement and husband, Ron of Pittsburg, KS; Lee Alloway and wife, Jan Hawn of Falls Church, VA; and Gordon Alloway and wife, Cyd of Overland Park, KS. She is preceded in death by one son, Wade S. Alloway and by her sister Ann Allen Lea. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Betty was born on August 13, 1921 in Wichita, Kansas, to H. Stanley and Gladys (Ragland) Allen. She is a graduate of Stephens College and the University of Kansas, where she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority. An avid athlete, Betty earned several varsity letters at KU. She also held masters degrees in library science and educational technology from the University of Hawaii. Betty was a teacher, librarian and proud career army wife--a job that took her all over the world. Upon returning to Kansas City in 1975, she worked at the Plaza branch of the Kansas City Public Library for thirty years. She was also very active in Federated Garden Clubs, including Kansas City Garden Club, holding leadership positions at the local, state, regional and national levels, including serving as President of the Federated Garden Clubs of Missouri from 1999-2001. She was a certified flower judge and an expert on invasive plant species. Betty was a registered parliamentarian, serving a number of organizations in that role. She was an active member of her church throughout her life, and a Chiefs season ticket holder for more than 25 years. A diehard Jayhawk, Betty was a lifetime member of the KU Alumni Association and the Jayhawk Society. She also enjoyed membership in the Iris Society, bowling, fencing, scuba diving, and swimming. After retiring to Kingswood Senior Living Community, Betty served as President and Secretary of the Kingswood Resident Association. Betty was a dynamic presence in many lives and will be deeply missed by all who loved her. This world is more beautiful because of how she took care of it and taught others to do the same. A memorial service will be held at Kingswood Senior Living Community, 10000 Wornall Road, Kansas City, MO, Saturday, January 15 at 10:00 AM.
