He graduated from Strong Vincent High School, then MIT with a BS in Electrical Engineering.
Commissioned an Ensign in the US Navy, he served at the end of WWII and again in the Korean War aboard USS GURKE (DD-783). He married Helen Louise Afflerbach, of Yoakum, Texas, in 1946.
After 19 years with Texas Instruments in Dallas, Bob returned to school, earning a Ph.D. at the University of Texas at Austin. In 1974, the family moved to Chatsworth, CA where he worked for San Fernando Electric Manufacturing.
Following his retirement in 1990, he and Helen, moved to Santa Maria. Bob was active in the St. Louis de Monfort small community and retreat programs, as well as the Elks Club. After Helen’s death, he moved to Ventura. His time was spent volunteering with the Senior Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE) and Shop A Hoy as well as participating in the small communities at Sacred Heart and Our Lady of the Assumption. He was active in the Knights of Columbus.
Bob spent his last few months under the kind, loving care of the Carol House and the Buena Vista Hospice. Their efforts gave him peace, comfort and dignity in his final days.
Bob is survived by his ten children, Rob, Maryhelen, Julie, George (Leonora), Frank (Michele), Sheila (Rick) Raives, Angela, Carolyn (Michael) Garges, Catherine (Paul) Karbel, and Martha Fiske; grandchildren, Lena, Jenifer, Neil, Kevin, Orus, Jenya, Ophelia, Elie, Dylan, Joey and Jakey; and his sister Geraldine Eller.
A recitation of the rosary will be held on Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011, 10:30 A.M. followed by a memorial mass at 11:00 A.M., Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 3175 Telegraph Rd., Ventura, CA. Reception immediately following in the parish center.
Inurnment will be at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, Point Loma (San Diego) CA at a later date.
