Born in New Bedford, a daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Garcia) Sylvia, she had been a resident of Fairhaven since 1965.
A graduate of New Bedford High School, class of 1947, she attended Bryant College, and she received her Bachelor of Arts in Humanities from S.M.U., now UMASS Dartmouth. She was a Teacher for the Catholic School Systems. She taught at St. Joseph’s schools in New Bedford and Fairhaven, retiring in 1992. Prior to teaching, she was Secretary to Executive Vice President of Aerovox in New Bedford for ten years.
She was a communicant of St. Joseph’s Church, Fairhaven, where she taught C.C.D. and was a member of the Couples Club. The parish nominated Ruth for the Marion Medal, which was presented to her by the Bishop of the Fall River diocese at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Fall River. She was a volunteer at area schools helping children, and was a eucharistic minister at Our Lady’s Haven.
In addition to her husband she is survived by five children, Mark Cabana of New Bedford, Judy Lally and her husband John of Fairhaven, Joan E. Cabana of Rosamond, CA, Lisa Cabana of Seattle, WA and David A. Cabana of Fairhaven, five grandchildren, Jasmine Rivera, Brittany Cabana, Thomas, Beth and Eric Lally, and three great grandchildren, Jayden, Nevaeh, and Aaliya.
Her Funeral will be held Tuesday, January 25, 2011 at 9:00 AM from the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME OF MEMORIAL TRIBUTE at FAIRLAWN, 180 Washington St. Fairhaven, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM in St. Joseph’s Church, 74 Spring St. Fairhaven. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting hours will be Monday from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Fairhaven.
