Linda Mary Peterson Chapman, of Dexter, Michigan passed away on February 3rd, 2011 at Arbor Hospice after an extended illness. Linda was born October 13th, 1938 in Big Rapids, Michigan to Morton and Nannette Peterson. She attended school in Port Huron, Michigan, where Linda graduated High School with Honors. She attended Albion College, where she met her future husband Daniel Chapman. After relocating to Ann Arbor, Michigan she attended and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Michigan. An exceptional educator, Linda worked in the Dexter Community Schools for over 30 years. She also taught briefly in Azores, Portugal while her husband was on active duty with the United States Air Force.
Along with her passion for education, Linda was highly involved in local historic preservation projects for the Webster Township Historical Society, including directing the relocation of the Wheeler Blacksmith Shop to its current location in 1983. Linda also earned a Master’s Degree in Historic Preservation from Eastern Michigan University. Linda was also very active on the Dexter Community Library Board, where she served as a board member for 22 years. As the board Facility Chair, she was delighted by the opening of the new Dexter District Library in 1996. Linda enthusiastically gardened, enjoyed cooking, reading and spending time with her grandchildren.
Linda will be missed by her many friends and family, and is survived by her husband, her two sons Dan (Carol Poulos) and David (Ann), as well as her five grandchildren Daniel, Amelia, Olivia, Kevin and Carolina. Cremation occurred according to her wishes. A visitation for friends and family will be held on Saturday, February 19th from 1-4 PM at the Dexter Senior Center, 7720 Ann Arbor Street. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Dexter District Library in her name.
