Mr. Archiopoli, age 92, of Charlotte, passed away on Monday, March 28, 2011 of congestive heart failure.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Andy was a WWII veteran (Army Air Corp) and a NYC Police Officer for 29 years. He played baseball for the Maxwell Air Base team and professional baseball after the war in the Alabama State League, playing shortstop and outfield. In 1947 he led the league in home runs with 24 and batted .345. He loved all sports, but later in life, golf became a passion that he shared with two of his children and his grandson.
A loving husband, father and grandfather, he is survived by his children, son Gerald (Staten Island, NY) and daughters Lynn (Charlotte) and Susan Noll (Vallejo, CA); grandson Thomas Archiopoli and his wife Sabrina (Staten Island); brother and sister-in-law Angelo and Janet Archiopoli (Brooklyn, NY), sister Theresa Ferrier (Brooklyn, NY), and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 59 years, Peggie, his parents, and five brothers.
Andy left New York in 1989 when he and Peggie retired to her hometown of Ozark, Alabama, There he was able to enjoy his days playing golf and reconnecting with many friends from his baseball years. In 2000 he and Peggie relocated to Charlotte to live with their daughter. That gave him the opportunity to explore Charlotte area golf courses.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, with the Reverend Frank O’Rourke, Celebrant. Inurnment will follow in the columbarium. The family will receive visitors from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. prior to Mass at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
