Mr. Alford was born September 24, 1923 in Goshen, MS.; son of the late John J. And Lucille Robinson Alford. He graduated from Crystal Springs High School in Crystal Springs, MS. He attended Copiah Lincoln Junior College until his enlistment in the Merchant Marines during World War II. He moved to LaGrange in 1953 to open Alford Buick; in the 1960’s he worked for a manufacturing sales group; and in 1972, he opened Coleman’s Barbeque, which he and his wife operated until their retirement in 1982. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Curren ‘Sis’ Alford; a daughter, Suzanne Alford; and a brother, John J. Alford, Jr.
Survivors include his daughter Sallie Alford (Wayne) Hadden; three sons, Howard S. ‘Scooter’ Alford, Jr., Peter T. (Tracey) Alford, and Perrin J. (Sharon) Alford; 12 grandchildren, Layla ‘Sunny’ (Robert) Aspinall, Howard S. ‘Trace’(Tannen) Alford, III, Jaime Alford, William Hadden, Peter Thomas ‘P.T.’ Alford, Jr., Curren Alford, Cason Alford, Christian Alford, Max Alford, Perrin J. ‘P.J.’ Alford, Jr., Lydia Alford, and Lucy Alford; two great-grandchildren, Ryder Alford and Sammy Alford; two sisters, Katherine Alford of Newnan and Dorothy Ainsworth of St. Louis, MO.; a brother, Billy Young of Long Beach, MS.; and several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, April 16, 2011 at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Douglas DeCelle and Rev. Max McCord officiating. A private entombment will be in Shadowlawn Mausoleum.
The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the service.
