Daniel W. Shuman, 62, passed away peacefully on April 26, 2011 after a courageous and brave battle against Multiple System Atrophy. He is survived, loved and will be deeply missed by his wife, Emily Atlas, his daughters Brooke Blecher, her husband, Matthew, their daughters, Ella, Maya and Sloane, Lindsy Catino, her husband, Tullio, their children, Ty and Reese, Julia Weisz, her husband, David, and Johanna Aronson, his father, Bernard Shuman and sister, Beth Shuman. His two loving caregivers, Willy Webster and Esta Chira, allowed him to live his life to the fullest. Born and raised in Philadelphia, PA, Dan graduated from the University of Arizona and the University of Arizona College of Law, Order of the Coif. After law school, Dan worked for Legal Aid and the Arizona Attorney General. He was the M.D. Anderson Foundation Endowed Professor of Health Law at Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law, where he served on the faculty for 34 years, through April 2011.He published over a dozen books and several dozen articles. Dan received the American Psychiatric Association Manfred S. Guttmacher Award in 1988 and 2011. Dan and Emily married in 1994. They enjoyed traveling and skiing. He passed his love and respect of education, adventure, and travel to his daughters. He thoroughly enjoyed research, writing, teaching, and cycling. He was an inspiration to all who were fortunate enough to know him.The memorial service will be held on April 28, 10:00am, at Lefkowitz Chapel at Temple Emanuel, 8500 Hillcrest Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Texas Voice Project for Parkinson Disease (http://www.texasvoiceproject.org/contact.html)
