Dr. Jim passed away suddenly on Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at Southlake Regional Health Centre. Reunited at last with his loving wife Clara (nee McPhee). Devoted father to Lynn (John) Stenabaugh, Margaret (Bill) MacDonald, Janice Allison, Evelyn (Stu) Gardner. Loving grandfather of Allison (Chris) Idestrup, Darryl Stenabaugh (Joanna Jackson), Heather, Stacy and Bryan MacDonald. Fondly remembered by his sister Evelyn Hunter and brother Tom Allison. Jim will be held in the hearts of many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
Jim was born March 23, 1918 in Belleville, the eldest son of Cleland and Ruby. He graduated in Medicine from the University of Toronto in 1943. While interning at St. Joseph’s Health Centre in Toronto he met Clara and they married in 1944. He served in the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps and then joined the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration. He was a General Practitioner in North Bay for 10 years. He also worked as Assistant Secretary of the OMA, Medical Director of the Toronto Rehabilitation Centre, and Chief of Medical Rehabilitation and Chronic Care for the Ontario government.
In 1968, he joined Chedoke Hospitals in Hamilton. He became Executive Director in 1970 and spent many happy years there. Subsequently, he was Administrator of the Villa Private Hospital in Thornhill. Prior to his retirement in 1988 he was invited to assist at McKellar General Hospital in Thunder Bay and Freeport Hospital in Kitchener.
Jim was an active member and Elder of the Presbyterian Church in Canada at Chedoke Church in Hamilton and St. Andrew’s in Aurora. He was also a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion at both locations.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Sunrise of Aurora for all the loving care provided to Dr. Jim.
Friends will be received at the Thompson Funeral Home, (530 Industrial Parkway South, Aurora) from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, May 2, 2011 and at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church (32 Mosley St, Aurora) on Tuesday, May 3, 2011 from 10 to 11 a.m. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew’s. Cremation to follow.
