Robert Gardner Bortz, 73, of Temple passed away on June 8 in the Olin E. Teague Medical Center after a courageous battle with cancer and other serious health issues. Visitation for Mr. Bortz will be held from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Friday, June 10 at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home. Services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. at St. Luke Catholic Church, Father Don Loftin officiating with burial at Hillcrest Cemetery, Temple following the service.
Bob was born in 3/28/1938 in Johnstown, Pa. to Chalmers H. and Mary A. Bortz who preceded him in death. He attended school in Numine, Pa. He joined the army and served in Korea. He attended Jamestown Community College in Jamestown, New York. He worked in the space program as a Solid Propellant Processor at Rocketdyne in McGregor. He then managed several Temple loan companies. He was a loan officer at Nations Bank and Texas Bank. He retired from Extraco Mortgage in Waco.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Shirley Ann (Wyrick) Bortz; a daughter, Melissa Michele Sebek and her husband Chris of Temple; a son, Brian Robert Bortz and wife Tiffany of Rockwall; grandchildren Brandi Lynn Sebek of San Marcos, Kyle Christopher Sebek of Temple, Tyler Logan Sebek of Temple, Braden Robert Bortz and Macy Leanne Bortz, both of Rockwall.
His survivors include sons of his first marriage, Robert G. Bortz, Jr. of Newalla, Ok. And Michael Lee Bortz of Tyler, and 5 grandchildren as well as his brothers and sisters, Richard Bortz and wife Sandy of Hewitt and Chalmers Bortz and wife JoRay of Waco, Helen Bish and Dorothy Jeffers of Pennsylvania and numerous nieces and nephews.
