Mary Neal Alexander passed away peacefully at her home on the 1st of July 2011. A native of Rutherford County, she just celebrated her 95th birthday on this past Tuesday, June 28th. Miss Alexander is preceded by her parents, Robert F. and Bessie Neal Alexander of La Vergne.
She is survived by a host of cousins and friends. Miss Alexander was home schooled through the 8th grade because it was 8 miles to the one room school. Her college years were spent at David Lipscomb and Middle Tennessee State University. Miss Alexander, who was affectionately called Miss “A” by her co-workers, began her career with the University of Tennessee Extension Service in Cannon County in 1941. She also worked in Hickman and Sumner Counties before becoming a member of the “old” District IV Staff in Cookeville, which included the 4-H Camp in Crossville.
Miss “A” may have retired from the Extension in 1971, but she kept abreast of issues facing today’s families through her involvement with the Nashville Association of Family and Consumer Sciences, National Association of Retired Federal Employees, Lebanon Road Church of Christ and other groups. She helped a lot of people in their time of need, educated those who needed it most in survival techniques and everyday tasks. Even at the age of 95, she stayed very active and enjoyed getting together with her family, friends, and former co-workers. Mary Neal Alexander will be missed more than she probably would have realized. She has her place now and can enjoy the rewards of a long life dedicated to her Lord and those in need.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from 2 o’clock until 4 o’clock in the afternoon and 6 o’clock until 8 o’clock in the evening on Tuesday, the 5th of July, in a drawing room of Woodlawn-Roesch-Patton. The funeral service is to be conducted at 11:30 o’clock in the morning on Wednesday the 6th of July in Woodlawn’s Dignity Hall with visitation one hour prior. Honorary pallbearers will be the NARFE.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family respectfully requests that contributions in honor of Miss “A” may be directed to the Bobby and Bessie Alexander Scholarship Fund at David Lipscomb or to the World Christian Broadcasting.
Arrangements under the direction of Woodlawn-Roesch-Patton Funeral Home and Memorial Park, Nashville, TN.
