Mary Christine Clowdis Barnes born August 18, 1913 in Lyerly, GA; died July 24, 2011. Graveside services will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 27, 2011, at Elmwood Memorial Park with Chaplain Burt Williams officiating under the direction of Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 5701 Hwy 277 South.
Christine moved to Munday, TX in 1919 with her family. She attended school at Sunset Schools near Munday. She graduated in 1932 in the first graduating class.
Christine married Herbert Marshall Barnes, Sr. on March 16, 1933 in Haskell, TX. They lived in Munday and Haskell before moving to Abilene in 1940. They had two children; Herbert Marshall Jr. and Sue. She worked for Thornton's Dept. Store for 30 years. After her retirement, she worked with Herbert in their meat market (Barnes Meat Market) until they both retired.
She was preceded in death by her husband Herbert Sr.; her mother Ella Susan Clowdis and her father Radford Andrew Clowdis; two sisters and four brothers; a great-grandson J.B. Barnes and many, many friends from her beloved Sunset High School. Christine attended every class reunion until two years ago.
Survivors include her son, Herbert Marshall Jr. and wife Glenna of Salina, Kansas; her daughter, Sue Barnes Martin and husband Tim of Tuscola; six grandchildren Terri Barnes Ellis, Stephen Barnes, Britt Barnes, Shelley Barnes Hanson, Kyle Martin and Christen Martin Clouse; seventeen great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
