Mr. Baker retired October 19, 1979 after a 32-year career with the US Postal Service. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and was a member of the American Legion, Paw Creek Post 353, and the American Rifle Association. He was an active member of Holly Hunter Baptist Church and the Jim Flowe Sunday School Class.
For most of his life, hunting and fishing were among his most favorite things to do.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Baker; daughter, Martha B. Sprinkle and husband, Raymond (R.W.) of Troutman; step-children, Cindy Brandt (Teb) and Curtis Sutton; four grandchildren, Mike Henderson (Wendy), David Henderson, Mark Henderson and Nancy Scercy (Rik); four step-grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and two sisters, Rachel Loftin and Polly Smith, both of Lincolnton; as well as many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Clark Baker, four sisters and four brothers.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, August 22, 2011 at Holly Hunter Baptist Church with Reverends Tim Nichols and Morris Little officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn West Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
