P. Maxine Brackett, 92, of Lima, died at 1:24 a.m., Monday, October 17, 2011, at her residence. She was born on Dec. 13, 1918, in Columbus, Ohio, to Russell S. and Delilah A. (Boyd) Brooks who preceded her in death. On Jan. 32, 1941, she married Robert E. Brackett, whom she met at Russells Point, and he died on Dec. 17, 1983.
Mrs. Brackett was a 1936 graduate of West High School, Columbus, Ohio, and a 1940 graduate of The Ohio State University, with a Major in Biological Sciences and German, and a Minor in Home Economics. She had been a student teacher at Starling Junior High, in Columbus, Ohio, and a teacher at Central High School, Lima, and then had performed home instruction through Lima City Schools. During the War, she had worked at the Steel Foundry. She later worked as an in-service instructor for St. Rita’s Dietary Department and then was a volunteer tutor for the 4th grade at Faurot School. She loved OSU football and all forms of nature, including flora and fauna. She loved to learn and was an avid reader.
Surviving are a daughter: Patti A. (Brackett) Janzen of Lima; seven grandchildren: Morgan A. Janzen and J. Gilbert Janzen both of Cincinnati, Lorelei (Matt) Zickafoose of Satellite Beach, FL, Mark (Cathy) Wahlie of Monroe, MI, Andrew (Shirley) Wahlie of Cridersville, Bruce Wahlie in the U.S. Air Force and Aaron Wahlie of St. Marys; ten great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; and a niece, Ginger (Hunter) Gunlock of Waynesville.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Tamara L. (Brackett) Wahlie.
Graveside services will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, the Alzheimer’s Association or to St. Rita’s Hospice.
