Ruth was a very independent person, leaving home at the age of 18 to find employment in eastern Ontario during the depression and war years. She worked at many various jobs in St. Catharines and Hamilton before returning to Fort Frances to work as a telephone operator in the old town hall. In those years married women were not allowed to work and Ruth was content to raise her family. When Carl retired from the Ontario Minnesota Pulp and Paper Co, Ruth went to work at Stedman’s and later retrained to work as a secretary for the Knox United Church.
Ruth loved to play games of all types and was very competitive. In her younger years she loved to bowl and play baseball. Housework was always second to any type of games. She spent many a Sunday afternoon, playing board games with her children and the neighbourhood kids. She could also be found in the back yard playing baseball and volleyball. If you were a friend of her children you were always welcome to come and play. Ruth was a member of Sister Kenney Centre and enjoyed all of their activities; especially bridge and the Senior Games. Ruth had many memories of tours taken in Canada, United States, England and Ireland. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, (her and dad wore out the pages of many crossword puzzle dictionaries). An avid reader Ruth continued to read until shortly before her death.
Funeral services will be held at the Knox United Church in Fort Frances, Ontario on Monday, November 28th at 11:00 a.m. Reverend Barbara Miller will officiate with interment in Riverview Cemetery in Fort Frances, Ontario.
