Bertrand Joseph Michaud, passed away suddenly at the age of 86, on November 26th, 2011 at the Evergreen Healthcare Center in Stafford Springs where he resided for the last four years. He was born September 12th, 1925 in St. Francis, Maine, the son of the late Emile Max and Agnes (Jandreau) Michaud. He was the beloved husband of 60 years to the late Marie Antoinette (Luzopone) who passed away January 18th of this year.
In 1992 Bert retired from Chandler Evans Control Systems Division of Colt Industries in West Hartford and prior to his tenure with CECO Bert was employed by Colt Firearms in Hartford and prior to that Pratt & Whitney Small Tool in West Hartford.
Bert was a proud U. S. Navy veteran of World War II serving aboard the USS Washington and the LST 564 in the Pacific Theater of Operations participating in the battles of Leyte, Luzon and Okinawa to name a few of many through his six years of service. He was a member of the Dennis Hillman Memorial Team and the 40 & 8 of the American Legion. He was awarded the Philippine Liberation Campaign Ribbon with two bronze stars; the American-Area Campaign Ribbon; and the Asiatic-Pacific Area Campaign Ribbon with three bronze stars.
He was an active member of the American Legion for the last 45 years and a Charter Member of Post 197, Marlborough. He held many offices and chairmanships from Post Commander to First District Commander to Area A State Vice Commander earning both State and National awards including Commander of the Year. He was very active in Child Welfare Programs, American Legion Baseball and a counselor and chairman for the Boy's State Program. He was also very proud of his time as a Service Officer helping fellow veterans in need, including finding them services through the Veteran's Administration, the Soldier's, Sailor's and Marine's Fund and other State and Federal agencies. At the time of his death he was the Volunteer Services Chairman for the State Veteran's Home and Hospital in Rocky Hill.
Bert was also an avid fisherman and hunter and a fan of all the UConn teams and a true Boston Red Sox fan through thick and thin.
Bert will be dearly missed by his daughter Jean Marie Michaud and her companion James R. Francoeur of Ellington; his brother Olivin I. of Avon; his cousin Conrad (Pat) Pelletier and his wife Geneva of St. Francis, Maine and many, many nieces and nephews and many dear friends and neighbors. Besides hie wife Marie and his parents, Bert was predeceased by his brothers Renaud G. (Reno - Mitch); Euclid R. (Clyde); Edwin D. (Eddie); his sisters, Priscilla (Pat); Fernande (Fern) and Edwinna (Winna, Edwin's twin).
His family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff of Evergreen Healthcare Center for their kindness, care, and above all, the love they shared with Bert. Bert will be buried with full military honors at the Veteran's Cemetery in Middletown at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the American Legion Post 197, P.O. Box 178, Marlborough, 06447, to the attention of the Boy's State Program.
