Virginia Lee McLaughlin of Greeley died Tuesday, December 20, 2011 in Hospice at North Colorado Medical Center. She was born July 2, 1931 to Kenneth Edwin and Mildred (Hoag) Thomas in Manhattan, Kansas.
Virginia was reared and educated in Kansas. She earned her bachelor degree at Kansas State Teacher’s College in Pittsburgh, Kansas and a Master’s Degree at New Mexico University in Portales, New Mexico. She worked as a secretary in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at University of Northern Colorado, and also taught business courses at Aims College. She was an award winning competitive typist.
On February 15, 1954, she married Norman McLaughlin in Pleasanton, Kansas. After marriage they moved to Corpus Christi, Texas. They also lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico Grand Junction, Colorado and Clovis, New Mexico. They moved to Greeley in 1973.
Virginia received numerous awards of recognition for her volunteer work in the community, including RSVP and United Way. She was a member of the Red Hat Society and was an active member of the First United Methodist Church.
Virginia and Norman belonged to the Merry Mixers Square Dance Club, Square Dance Campers Club No. 085. They wintered near Phoenix and Apache Junction. She was an avid reader and enjoyed jigsaw and crossword puzzles. She loved to play the piano.
She is survived by her husband, Norman; 3 sons, Dennis McLaughlin (Lana) of Allen, Texas, Mark McLaughlin of Greeley and Tim McLaughlin (Christy) of Great Falls, Montana; 5 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
Celebration of Life 10:30 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church, 917 10th Avenue, Greeley.
