Patty was born on March 12, 1940, in Washington, DC to the late Charles Richmond Chastain and Barbara Peavey Chastain. She was a graduate of The College of William and Mary; obtained a MA in Russian history from the University of Hawaii; and earned a Ph.D. in French history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Patty was a professor of European History at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN, and she previously served on the faculties of North Carolina State University and Salem College. She spent a year in Paris on the Georges Lurcy Fellowship conducting research that culminated in the publication of her book, Foreign Policy and the French Revolution. Patty’s passion for history and teaching inspired all who knew her. She not only found great joy in teaching, but also, in playing golf and tennis as well as attending the opera, symphony, and art exhibits. Patty was a loving and caring mother, grandmother, and friend. She found the fun in all that she did, and her positive attitude inspired all who knew her.
Patty was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur King Howe, Jr. She is survived by her daughter, Kari Howe Stoltz and her husband, Jerry, of Raleigh; two grandchildren, Haley Chastain Stoltz; and Elesa Ann Stoltz; and brother, Peter Chastain, of Greensboro.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 18th at Edenton Street United Methodist Church, 228 W. Edenton Street, Raleigh, NC 27603. The family will receive friends from 4:00-6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 17th at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 St. Mary's Street, Raleigh, NC 27605.
