LTC Curtis H. Alloway (Ret.) of Kansas City, Missouri, died Thursday, January 19, 2012. He is survived by his three children: Patricia Clement (husband Ron) of Pittsburg, Kansas; Lee Alloway (wife Jan Hawn) of Falls Church, Virginia; and Gordon Alloway (wife Cyd) of Overland Park, Kansas. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Betty L. Alloway; one son, Wade S. Alloway; and his siblings, Merrill Alloway and Margaret Alloway Hightower. Curtis was born on September 24, 1920, in Camden, New Jersey, to Clarence and Audrey (Ivins) Alloway. He is a 1938 graduate of William Chrisman High School, Independence, and a 1942 graduate of the University of Kansas, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He was also a member of ROTC and commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Army in June, 1942. As a Company commander with the 35th Infantry Division in World War II, he earned the Combat Infantry Badge with star and was twice wounded and awarded Purple Hearts. He received two awards of the Bronze Star, as well as the Meritorious Service Medal, after service in the Korean War and Viet Nam. His tours abroad included four years in Germany and three assignments in Korea. Curtis earned a Master in Business Administration from George Washington University in 1969. After retiring in 1975 he remained active in the 35th Infantry Division Association, serving as its President from 1992-93. Curtis was also active in the Methodist Church, singing in the choir and serving as treasurer of two different congregations. In retirement Curtis was an active resident of Kingswood Senior Living Community, serving as the President of the Kingswood Residents’ Association. Curtis was a proud and loving husband, father and soldier who lived a life of integrity and sacrifice. He was an inspiration to his family, his Unit, and all who were blessed to be in his quiet presence. A visitation will be held at Mt. Moriah & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, Missouri, on Monday, January 23, at 10:00 a.m., with funeral services to follow at 11:00 a.m. Full military honors will be rendered by the Fort Leavenworth honor guard.
