James was born on February 10, 1921 in Oneonta, the son of the late Raymond D. and Mildred (Wilder) Champlin. He married Barbara Loope on February 9, 1946 and she predeceased him on April 14, 2010.
James was a mechanic for the ECD Bendix Company in Sidney. He served his country in the US Navy during WW II.
James enjoyed living on Arnolds Lake, where he was a member of the lake association.
James is survived by his daughters, Terry Church and Pat Stilson; three grandchildren, Eric Champlin, Karen Church and Joshua Stilson and a great grandson, Connor, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
James was predeceased by his parents, his wife, his son, James W. Champlin, Jr. and a sister, Dorothy McAllister.
The family will gather at the Memorial Rock at a future time for remembrance. There will be no calling hours.
