Carl Freeman Burmeister, Jr. born April 6, 1923 in Pensacola, FL and a longtime resident of Mobile, AL passed away peacefully Friday morning, April 13, 2012. He was 89 years old. Mr. Burmeister began his career at an early age working for his parents at Carl’s Bakery in Pensacola until he graduated from Pensacola High School in 1941. He then attended the University of Tennessee until war broke out and he was drafted into service in 1942. During World War II, the Army sent him to the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa for flight training. He later served at various bases in Texas and Florida as a flight instructor in the US Army Air Corp teaching pilots to fly B-25 bombers. He was honorably discharged with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in 1945. He was honorably discharged from the US Air Force Reserve as a 1st Lieutenant in June 1965. Following the war, Burmeister graduated from Auburn University in 1951with a Bachelors of Architecture. He started his own architectural firm and partnered often with Holmes & Holmes Architects, Harry Inge Johnstone, Edward Faddis, Arch Winter and others. His designs included the library and other buildings at the University of South Alabama, the auditorium at Julius T Wright, gymnasium at UMS-Wright, the State Capitol building renovations in Montgomery as well as the clubhouse at Isle Dauphine Golf Club. He was an Emeritus Member of the American Institute of Architects. Burmeister will be remembered for his kind heart and his devotion to his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl Freeman and Georgina Bjornsen Burmeister, and by his wife of 62 years, Sara Mozelle Bonner Burmeister who he loved dearly. He is survived by his three children, Carl David Burmeister (Jewel), Pensacola, FL, Johanna Mia Burmeister-Laws (Mathew), Fairhope, AL, and Gina Michele Burmeister (Philip Hooper), Daphne, AL; his sisters-in-law, Emma Sue Bonner Midgley (Holley), Mobile, AL, and Nancy Bonner Morris, Panama City FL; six grandchildren, Joshua Erich Burmeister (Lee), Mobile, AL, Anna Elise Poche’, Mobile, AL, Nicole Kintz (Jamie), Pensacola, FL, Carl David Burmeister, Jr. (Wanda), Pensacola, FL, Heather Hyams (Adam), Miami, FL, Jason Burmeister (Ann Marie), California, Maryland; twelve great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. The family also thanks Daryl and Joni Steiner for their friendship and support. Visitation will be at 10 am on Monday, April 16, 2012 at Grace Lutheran Church, 1356 Government Street in Mobile, AL immediately followed by funeral services officiated by Rev. Arlyn Sturtz at 11 am. The burial will then be held that afternoon at 1:30 pm at Bayview Memorial Park, 3351 Scenic Highway, Pensacola, FL.
