Aino B. Ahonen, 89, of East Sandwich died on April 24, 2012 at Cape Heritage Healthcare in Sandwich. She was the wife of the late Winthrop V. Ahonen and is survived by her children: Jean of West Barnstable, Janet Mullen and her husband Daniel of West Barnstable and John and his wife Judy of Milton, MA. Her grandchildren, Matthew of Charlestown, MA, Jessica of New York City and Jennifer of Milton also survive her. She leaves several nieces and nephews and was predeceased by her brother Eino of Peabody, MA.
Born on September 30, 1922 to the late Matti and Ida Berg, Aina (as she was affectionately known) was raised in Peabody. She received her RN degree from the Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing in 1944 and then served as a first lieutenant in the US Army Nurse Corps. She served in France in the 221st General Field Hospital.
After marrying Winthrop, Aina moved to East Sandwich where she raised her children and helped run the family’s cranberry farm. She then resumed her nursing at Cape Cod Hospital and worked in the maternity ward for fifteen years.
Always the anchor of her family and a friend to many, Aina was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She will be truly missed by all who loved her.
Visiting hours will be held from 4 to 7 pm on Friday, April 27, 2012 in the Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home, 154 Route 6A in Sandwich. Funeral services will be at 10 am on Saturday, April 28, 2012 at the First Lutheran Church, 1663 Route 6A, West Barnstable, with burial following in Cedarville Cemetery in East Sandwich. In lieu of flowers, donations in Aina’s memory may be made to the First Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 157, West Barnstable, MA 02668.
