Mildred Alice Owens Barnes “Mib”, 86, lost her battle to cancer in Harris Hospice Center at Presbyterian Hospital on May 29, 2012. Born in Blacksburg, SC on May 5, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Dexter Hillard Owens and Marie Malissy Campbell Owens. Mildred loved her home of 44 years, where she spent countless hours gardening, growing flowers, or just touring her property and visiting neighbors on her golf cart. She loved to cook, especially desserts and had a real sweet tooth.
A funeral to celebrate her life will be held at 2:00PM, Saturday, June 2nd at The Derita Chapel of McEwen Funeral Service, 6300 Mallard Creek Road, with Pastor Timothy S. Nichols officiating. Interment will follow in Gethsemane Memorial Gardens. A catered visitation will be held from 7:00PM to 9:00PM Friday evening at the funeral home.
Mildred is survived by four daughters, Jean B. Gurley and husband Jack, of Charlotte, Lynn B. Starnes and husband Jimmy, of Midland, Gail B. Whitson and husband Ket, of Willow Spring, Karen J. Barnes, of Mooresville; a son, Charles T. Barnes, Jr and wife Patsy, of Charlotte; two brothers, Eugene Owens, of Lawrenceville, GA, Dwayne Owens, of Mooresville; a sister, Alice “Angel” Beal, of Newton; twelve grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Thurman Barnes, Sr.; two sisters, Evelyn Ricardo, Hazel Buehler and a brother Loren Owens.
