She was born December 29, 1920, in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, a daughter of the late Joseph and Carmelina (Pelligrini) Sferra. Florence was affectionately known as “Flee” to her loved ones. An avid cook and a helper to many, she delighted in reaching out to family, friends, and the community. Florence volunteered as a driver for Meals on Wheels, and helped many older friends and neighbors get around.
Florence was a graduate of Ravenna High School Class of 1938 and later graduated from Bohecker’s Business College. Prior to suffering a breathing disability which sidelined her from a career, she had worked and served in many capacities in the Portage County area. Florence was an air raid warden during WWII while working at the Ravenna Arsenal, she also worked as a secretary for Purelator, Carlon, and for Lamb Electric, where during the late 1940’s she served as a union president.
She was preceded in death by her parents Carmelina and Joseph Sferra (owners of the little grey store on South Diamond Street), and by her granddaughter Emily Austin. Surviving family members include her son Bill Austin and daughter-in-law Peggy, granddaughters Angela and Mary Austin, and her sisters Tillie Shafer and Letty Sicuro, all of Ravenna.
Cremation has taken place, and a Memorial Mass will be celebrated by Reverend Robert Miller at 11:00 AM on Thursday, June 14, 2012, at Immaculate Conception Church, 409 W. Main St., Ravenna.
