Pauline J. Lubin ("Boots" ) was born in Nebraska on July 24, 1919, to Rose Thompson and Luther James Braden. She had 3 sisters; LaVada, Penny, DeLight and a brother, Butch. She grew up in a rural area north of Denver and graduated from Boulder High School.
Boots passed away after a brief illness on June 26, 2012, one month short of her 93rd birthday. She was surrounded by family holding her hands. She was preceded in death by her only son, Lauren, who was killed by a drunk driver at 28 years old and her husband of 60 years, Luby.
Boots is survived by her devoted daughter, Polly and 4 grandchildren who were the absolute love of her life; Ryan Lutz (Ashriel), Lindsay Lee (Dan), Toby Lutz (Taylor) and Tyler Lutz (Brittany). Boots also had 4 great grandchildren; Loren, Lily, Scarlett and Harlowe. Lindsay is pregnant with her great grandchild #5 and Taylor is pregnant with her great grandchild #6. Boots cherished holding those babies.
Loving life and living everyday to the fullest, Boots was energetic. She modeled for all of us respect, joy, undying friendship and hard work. In fact, she worked until she was 88 years young at Everitt Middle School in the library. People often guessed her age at as much as 20 years younger than she actually was.
Boots and Luby owned and operated a pharmacy in North Denver for more than 3 decades. At one point, they worked together for 12 years straight, 10am to 10pm/Sunday to Sunday with no vacation days in order to care for their family. Boots was a child of the depression. So she was careful and grateful for everything.
After the pharmacy, Boots also worked at Elitch Theatre Box Office Company. She enjoyed working with the stars of the summer stock theatre and claimed that was her best job ever. She then worked as a postal mistress for the Philnor Pharmacy postal station. Folks were amazed to see her lift boxes and greet customers just like it was her own business. She ended her work career working in a library. She loved books and literacy; Education was very important to her! The English Language Learners she tutored in reading appreciated her patience in helping them learn to read.
Flowers and gardening were a hobby for Boots. Her roses were beautiful and she had a great eye for filling clay pots with gorgeous blooming flowers every summer. Her back yard was her pride and joy. When she and Polly sold their Applewood home this past May, Boots left all the clay pots full of colorful flowers for the new owners, saying she believed in karma, "What goes around comes around."
The grandkids loved her cooking. She was well known for her delicious pies, Christmas cookies and three layer strawberry cake. No one makes flaky pie crust like she did.
An avid sports fan, Boots never missed a Broncos game or Rockies game on TV. She spent her Sundays reading cover to cover anything about her teams. Boots also was present at every tennis match and baseball game of her grandchildren. She even traveled out of state to be at tournaments. She talked fondly of taking Ryan to Florida to a tennis academy for a semester and loved being included in trips to Vail for tennis camps.
Boots was a humble, kind and gentle spirit. She loved to sit on the patio, sip coffee and be with her family. She was selfless in her devotion to her daughter and grandchildren and we will hold her in our hearts forever.
