Margaret Gibson McIntire, beloved wife, mother and grandmother died August, 7, 2012 at home surrounded by her children, grandchildren, their families, her pets and the memories of a long and extraordinarily well lived life.
Margaret was born on June 3, 1919 in Kingwood, West Virginia. She married Dr. Thornton S. McIntire on July 25, 1946 in Kingwood. Dr. McIntire was an obstetrician and gynecologist who practiced in Odessa from 1956 until his death in 1994.
Margaret, a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Soriety, graduated from West Virginia University in 1941with a degree in English. She served with the Red Cross during World War II. After the war she taught English in Morgantown, Kingwood, and Tunnelton, West Virginia.
In 1956 she and her husband moved to Odessa. Margaret was active in The Odessa Garden Club, helped to found the Odessa Symphony, and was a long time member of The Crystal Ball Foundation and The Ector County Medical Auxiliary. A life long democrat, she was actively interested and involved in democratic politics her entire life. She was a student of the stock market and was a very successful investor over the course of her life.
Margaret was an avid gardener and was a great believer in the humane treatment of animals. Additionally, her interest in education was life long - a founding member of The Education Foundation and a faithful sponsor of the annual concerts each year, she was also a great supporter of Food to Kids and was a generous contributor to Odessa charities and organizations for more than 50 years including St. John’s Episcopal Church and School.
These things did not fully define Margaret. Throughout her life she was a force to be reckoned with. She was a great neighbor and friend, enormous fun, and loved to experience, do and share what life had to offer - whale watching in Hawaii at 88, flying the Concorde after seeing the Great Pyramids of Egypt, walking the Great Wall of China, helicoptering the great Hawaii lava flows and the river canyons of Alaska, being enthralled on African Safari, and exploring the Galapagos. She was greatly appreciated for her intelligence and wit – and sense of fun. To her grandchildren she was the beloved “MeMa” and “Nana” who they remember with love, admiration and for her great sense of fun.
Her daughters Jane McIntire Boles of Odessa and Dr. Melissa McIntire Sherrod of Fort Worth; four grandchildren, Dr. Madeline Jane Boles of Kennedyville, Maryland, Jeffrey Boles of Norman, Oklahoma, Colin Sayer Sherrod and wife Heather Sherrod of Houston and Nicolas McIntire Sherrod and husband Joshua L. Howton of Fort Worth survive Margaret. Her sons-in-law Burnace J. Boles of Odessa and Michael S. Sherrod of Fort Worth also survive her. Her nephews include the Honorable Jay Gibson of Odessa, Texas, David Gibson of Austin, Texas, George Price of Tucson, Arizona, and her niece Sara Gibson Phares of Elkins, West Virginia.
