Judge Wells Stewart passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, the 18th of September 2012, in Kerrville, Texas. Although Wells considered himself a resident of Houston and Corpus Christi, for the past several years he and his wife Susan have lived in Kerrville, where he obtained much pleasure from spending time with his youngest granddaughter.
Wells loved and was loved by his family and many dear friends. He will be remembered for the twinkle in his blue eyes, his witty sense of humor, and his passion for fishing and hunting. From bridge to backgammon, classical music to cooking, Wells enjoyed sharing his many hobbies and interests with friends and family.
Wells was born in San Antonio on the 28th of November 1932 to Maco and Virginia Kirkland Stewart. He attended Lawrenceville School, Princeton University, and the University of Texas Law School. Wells was an Assistant District Attorney in Harris County and later became Judge of the 308th District Court of Texas. He held positions in many civic organizations, including Director of Goodwill Industries, Director of the Board of Regents of Texas Southern University, Director of the Houston Association of Big Brothers, and Vice President of the Houston Youth Symphony & Ballet. Wells also served on the Board of Directors for the Juvenile Board of Harris County. He was a member of Arabia Temple Shriners, Masons, and Downtown Kiwanis.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Maco; and by his first wife, Margaret Wright Stewart. Wells is survived by his loving wife, Susan Highrabedian Stewart; and his children: Margot Stewart Campbell, Catherine Stewart Heidrick, Dr. Wells Stewart Jr., Shannon Virginia Stewart, Dr. Laurence Stewart Sawyer, Dr. Ryan Stewart Roberts, and Forrest Vance Stewart. He is also survived by his many grandchildren: Catherine, Reid, Robert, Margaret, Charles, Kirkland, Wells III, Russell, Louise, Sheila, Allie, Josie, and Wren. His niece, Macol, and nephews, Maco and Stewart, also survive him.
A memorial service is to be conducted at one o'clock in the afternoon on Saturday, the 22nd of September, at The Church of St. John the Divine, 2450 River Oaks Boulevard in Houston, where the Rev. Reagan Cocke, Associate Rector, is to officiate. Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the adjacent Sumners Hall.
Serving as honorary pallbearers are Dr. Paul Ayars, James E. Brill, Kit Carson, John D. Hagerman, Dr. Martin Hanisch, Judge Manuel Leal, Dr. Claude McLelland, Dale L. Martin, Jack B. Moorhead, Townes Pressler, Jack Scholl, Richard Smith, Donald L. Turner, Tony Vallone, and Carol Vance.
Prior to Saturday afternoon's service, the family will have gathered for a private interment at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery in Houston.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family suggests with gratitude that memorial contributions in Judge Stewart's name be directed to The Church of St. John the Divine, 2450 River Oaks Blvd., Houston, TX, 77019; or to the charity of your choice .
