Janet W. Hoobler, 99, died October 6 in Saline, MI. She was born February 15, 1913, in Milwaukee, WI, the third of five children of Gerrit Jacob deGelleke and Sylvia deHeus deGelleke. Janet graduated from Beloit College in 1934 and did graduate work at the University of Chicago in the School of Social Service Administration. She was a child welfare worker for the State School for Dependent and Neglected Children at Sparta, WI.
In 1944, Janet married Peter Holderness Woods, who predeceased her in 1960. They have two daughters—Antonia Woods, of South Hadley and Arlington, MA, and Susan Woods, of Presque Isle, ME, and two grandsons, Peter Ellis (Jessica Howell Ellis) of Mt. Rainier, MD and Scott Ellis (Jenny Silverstein Ellis) of White River Junction, VT. Janet has two great grandchildren, Jasper and Josie Ellis. She is also survived by her youngest sister, Elizabeth deGelleke Palmer, of Wauwatosa, WI, 16 nieces and nephews, and 26 great nieces and nephews.
Janet moved to Ann Arbor in 1969 after her marriage to Dr. Sibley Hoobler. She was a life member of the Washtenaw Audubon Society, the Ann Arbor Public Library, and the Ridges Sanctuary of Baileys Harbor, WI. She was also a benefactor of the University of Michigan Musical Society, and a member of the Nature Conservancy and the Matthaei Botanical Gardens.
The family will hold a private memorial service.
