Philip Ray Atkins, age 95, departed this life on Monday, October 22, 2012. Phil was born in Kernersville on August 15, 1917 to the late Mr. Elmer Clarence Atkins and Mrs. Jessie Gray Atkins and was the middle son of five children. Phil was the beloved husband of the late Kathryn Peace Atkins of Charlotte.
Survivors include daughters, Martha A. Atkins of the home and Barbara Atkins Freeze and her husband John of Huntersville; two grandchildren, Kyle Landon Freeze and Kendall Leigh Freeze also of Huntersville.
Phil graduated from High Point College on a baseball scholarship and then joined the Army in 1941. He married Kathryn of High Point in Miami, FL in 1943. After 4 years in the Navy, Phil became salesman for Underwood Corporation. He received a certificate of Merit from Greensboro Junior Chamber of Commerce in 1947. In 1949 Phil and a friend started their own business “Southern Industries” of 25 years. Phil was a member of Avondale Presbyterian Church and served as a dean and Elder and also was President of his Sunday class. Phil touched so many lives and to have had him in your life for even a moment, would have blessed you more than some people would do in a whole lifetime. He was loved by everyone that knew him and will be missed by all.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, October 26, 2012 at 1:30pm at Trinity Cemetery with Rev. Mel Anderson officiating. Also a memorial service will be held on November 4, 2012 at 2pm at Avondale Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, with Rev. John Earle officiating.
