On Saturday, November 10th, the angels came and carried Carmen F. Longo to join his wife, Rose and his family in heaven. Carmen passed away at age 92, with his loving children at his side. Carmen was born in Newark, New Jersey to his loving parents, the late Luigi and Angelina Longo. Carmen was raised in New Jersey and as a young man worked at the Lionel Train Company. He was known as the “candy man”, due to his frequent stops at the candy vending machine. Carmen was a decorated Army Air Force World War II veteran serving in Italy, assigned to armament and participated in the Ploesti Air Raid. Upon his honorable discharge in 1945, Carmen married his sweetheart, Rose Telesco. They moved to Washington, D.C., where Carmen was a policeman. Their two sons were born there and in the early 1950’s, the family moved back to New Jersey, where their daughter was born. Carmen worked for Irvington Motors for many years until the family moved to DeLand in the late 1960’s. Carmen was then employed as the Service Manager at Bill Holler Chevrolet in DeLand until his retirement. He was well liked and respected in his field. After retirement, Carmen assisted his sons when they opened Longo Bros. Amoco Station on Highway 92, and later helped his sons as they opened Sunshine Bowling Center, where Carmen worked daily until his health declined. Carmen continued to enjoy visiting the bowling center when his health permitted. Carmen enjoyed crossword puzzles, bowling, horse races, building model cars and planes, listening to music, and working on cars and anything else that needed fixing. He was the “go-to” man when it came to automobiles. Carmen was well liked and would help anyone in need. Carmen was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Disabled American Veterans. Carmen is survived by his sister, Rose Mulloy, his sons, Louis (Marie) Longo, Peter (JoAnne) Longo, his daughter, Angela Stone, his grandsons, Philip Longo, Peter Longo, Jr. (Victoria) and his great grandson, Peter W. Longo III and many nieces, nephews and extended family. He was predeceased by his wife, Rose Longo, his parents, Luigi and Angelina, his brothers, Joseph Longo, Rosario (Sal) Longo, Gaetano (Tommy) Longo, sister, Fannie Bonacorsy and his loving grandson, Paul Longo. Our family wishes to extend their grateful thanks to Dr. Morgan and all the staff of Woodland Terrace for caring for Dad for many years as they would a member of their own family, especially to those who cared for Dad on a daily basis. Additionally, we thank the staff of Halifax Health Hospice of Volusia/Flagler County for their compassion and caring. Also, thank you to Dr. Crew at the VA Outpatient Clinic for his dedication to providing for Dad’s care. Dad, we will miss your sense of humor, smiles and the twinkle in your eyes. If we could write a story, it would be the greatest ever told, of a kind and loving father who had a heart of gold. We could write a million pages, but still be unable to say just how much we’ll love and miss you every single day. We remember all you taught us. We’re hurt, but won’t be sad, because you’ll send us down the answers and you’ll always be our DAD. You are forever in our hearts. Love your family.
