Memorial services will be held on Monday, November 19, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home, 520 W. Powell Blvd. in Gresham, Oregon. Private burial will be at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon.
Russ was born on April 21, 1927 in Guthrie, Minnesota to Arthur and Leila Gladen. He was their sixth child in a family of ten children. When he was a teenager, much of his family moved west, settling briefly in Spokane, WA. before moving to Portland. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1945 and served in the South Pacific theater of operations until the end of the war. Upon leaving the service in 1946, he went to work for PGE. He trained for and became a journeyman lineman. He worked for 42 years with PGE and was a 65 year member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers union.
In 1949, Russ met JoAnn Bergmann, and they were married in July of 1950. In October 1951, he became a father to daughter Brenda. In 1956 they bought a home in Gresham where he lived until his death.
Russ was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church and was a life member of the Gresham Elks Lodge. H loved hunting and fishing throughout his life and took up golf upon his retirement. He enjoyed traveling in RV’s to various parts of the country over the years. He was an avid reader and always enjoyed tinkering with things around the house and garden. He was a very affable man and generous with family and friends, as well as total strangers.
Russ is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, JoAnn, daughter Brenda Prenger and her husband Jim of Portland, OR., and sisters Eleanor Johnson of Jackson, MD., Rosalie Gould of Redmond, OR., Arlene Jackson of Woodburn, OR., and many nieces and nephews.
