Michael T. Major, 66, of Orchard Street, Cranston passed away November 13, 2012 surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Esther (DiPippo) Major and son of the late Everett and Rita (Brennan) Major.
Michael’s career and passion with the community and social services spanned many years. In 1970, he was the first Troop Leader with the Narragansett Council of Boy Scouts to lead Troop 69, the youngest inner city group of children, to Yawgoo Valley for overnight camp. In 1972 he began working for The Joslin Community Center as an Outreach Director for substance abuse in his community.
He created The Junction Drug Program, in Olneyville Square in 1973 and in 1976 he founded The Junction Human Service Corporation, a non-profit agency in which he was Executive Director. This was the first facility in R.I. committed to blending professionals and para-professionals to servicing adolescences within the community through various modes of treatment prevention. It also dealt with problems experienced within a family, school or social structure including drugs and alcohol abuse. He also served on numerous State and City Boards and Agencies. Upon retiring in 1994, he soon took on his new role as an adoring and proud grandfather (Papa).
His human services were not just his job, it was his passion that went far beyond his corporate title. Mike was a living, breathing encyclopedia of knowledge and compassion for all walks of life, including animals, and selflessly made it his life’s mission to help anyone in need.
He was the father of Lori Iannucci and Gina Audino; father in law of Norman Audino, Jr.; proud and dear grandfather of Olivia Sophia Audino and brother of Charles, William and Kevin Major, Patricia Walsh and the late Kathy Major-Davis.
His funeral will be held Saturday at 8:45 AM in the ROMANO FUNERAL HOME, 627 Union Avenue, Providence followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am in Immaculate Conception Church, 237 Garden Hills Drive, Cranston.
