Mr. Thomson was born in Petersburg, Va. on January 25, 1921, son of the late Leon Thomson and Vashti Caudle Thomson. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two brothers, John Graham and Albert Eanes Thomson and a sister, Laura Katherine.
Mr. Thomson served his country proudly by joining the Army at the outset of WWII and served with 101st Airborne Division. At the time of his discharge he met and courted Jamie Wynell Fowler of Soperton, Ga. The two were married on September 7, 1946. Together they raised five children, James Richard "Dick", Jamie Eugenia "Jeannie", Frances Deborah "Debbie", David Eric and John Everet. The couple celebrated 66 years of marriage together.
Mr. Thomson entered Georgia Institute of Technology in 1948. While at Tech, he joined the Naval Air Reserve, was activated during the Korean Conflict, and deployed to Port Lyautey, French Morocco. At the end of his service he returned to complete his studies at Tech and earned a B.S. in Industrial Management. After graduation in 1953, he was employed by Mead Corporation in Chillicothe, Oh. He transferred to the newly formed Georgia Kraft Co in Macon, Ga. in 1954 and then to the Georgia Kraft Krannert mill at Rome, Ga. in 1958 where he served in positions of increasing responsibility with the human resources department, rising to Director of Compensation and Benefits at the company's corporate offices until the unit was dissolved by the parent corporations in about 1991. He continued to work for Mead Container as a consultant for several more years after his retirement.
Mr. Thomson was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church of Rome where he remained active until advanced age and declining health prevented it. He was a long time Rotarian and remained active with the Rome Rotary Club until recent years. Mr. Thomson served the Northwest Georgia Council of the Boy Scouts of America and received the Silver Beaver award in 1984 for his life service to scouting in the area. Mr. Thomson and his wife Jamie were avid travelers and made extensive trips around the globe throughout the years of their marriage, traveling to every continent including Antarctica and visiting about any famous landmark one might care to name. He led a long and industrious life and served his family and community with humility and zeal.
Survivors include his wife, Jamie Fowler Thomson, and five children, Mr. James Richard Thomson (Margaret George) of Marietta, Dr. Jamie Eugenia "Jeannie" Thomson Miller (Mark Miller) of Kennesaw, Mr. David Eric Thomson (Carol Frost) of Armuchee, Dr. John Everett Thomson(Beth Thompson) of Canton, Ms. Frances Deborah Thomson of Cumming. Six grandchildren, Dr. Jennifer Thomson Lawrence, Mr. Jonathan Eric Thomson, Mr. Joshua Frost Thomson, Ms. Amy Elizabeth Thomson, Mr. Hisham El-Shaffey, Ms. Hala El-Shaffey and four great grandchildren, Margaret Ann "Meg" Lawrence, Joseph Wyatt Thomson, Jakob Lee Thomson, and Jonathan Everett Thomson also survive.
The family will receive friends at Daniel’s funeral home Monday evening November 19, 2012 from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. At other hours the family may be reached at the residence.
Services for Mr. Thomason will be conducted Tuesday November 20, 2012 at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of Rome, with Rev. Larry Caywood officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be the Adult Fellowship Sunday School Class.
