On November 21, 2012, Lucy Cave Harris, loving wife of the late Carlton Matthaei Harris, Sr. Mother of Katharine Harris Reinke of Catonsville, MD, Lucy Matthaei Harris of Greenville, SC, and Carlton Matthaei Harris, Jr. of Naples, FL.
Lucy was born on February 19, 1916 in Luray, Virginia, the second of seven children of Clara Miller Cave and Arnold Blackwell Cave. She grew up in Luray and in Washington, DC, graduating from Roosevelt High School in 1934. She worked for the federal government for several years as an administrator. She married Carlton on August 3, 1937, and thereafter lived the life of a Methodist minister’s wife, serving congregations with her husband in Brentwood, MD, Easton, MD, Wilmington, DE, Salisbury, MD, Cumberland, MD, Catonsville, MD, Oxford, MD, Royal Oak, MD, and Baltimore, MD. After retirement, Lucy was a long time member of Catonsville United Methodist Church.
Lucy’s interests included needlepoint, knitting and embroidery work. She was very accomplished, winning many blue ribbons. She was also an avid reader and skilled baker. Her family will miss the many special dishes for which she was known.
Lucy particularly loved South China, Maine, and her happy days spent in her cottage on the shores of China Lake. After the passing of her husband in 1979, she took great comfort from her annual visits to Maine, every year that her health allowed. Her last trip was during the summer of 2009.
Lucy was pre-deceased by three brothers and two of her sisters. Her sister, Adelaide Porter, lives in Palo Alto, California. Lucy had six grandchildren, Katharine, Christina, Carlton (Mac), Maeve, Grace and Zhen, and two great-grandchildren, Ava and Liam. She loved all of her family very much, and enjoyed hearing about their lives and accomplishments up until her last day.
Family will receive friends at the Sterling Ashton Schwab Witzke Funeral Home of Catonsville, 1630 Edmondson Ave., Catonsville, MD 21228 on Tuesday from 10 to 11 am, where services will be held at 11 am. Interment will be at Druid Ridge Cemetery.
