James was born May 27, 1948 in Augusta, Georgia, to Frances McLarty and Robert L. Krieger, Sr. He grew up on the Eastern Shore of Virginia at Wallops Island and attended the University of Virginia, where he played football. James served briefly in US Air Force, before his medical discharge in 1968. He moved to Atlanta, GA in 1975 where he worked in sales for Kraft Power Company and Fuse-Weld, before starting his own business in 1984. James owned and operated a number of businesses in the diesel engine machine shop industry till 1997, when he sold his Atlanta operation and began a new career in real estate. He became a real estate broker and opened a residential real estate firm in Atlanta in 2003. His real estate firm grew to five offices in three states as he pursued opportunities in North Carolina and Virginia. James and his wife, Margaret relocated to Cary, NC, in 2007 to focus on his Triangle real estate activities. He enjoyed fishing (or at least drowning worms), any kind of card game, and almost any kind of music, from Rimsky-Korsakov to Pink Floyd to Miles Davis.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Margaret Horst, his son Stephen, and daughter Kathryn, all of Cary, NC; and six siblings: older brother Robert L. Krieger, Jr. (Bonnie), Hampton, VA; younger sister Karen Krieger, Edenton, NC; younger brothers William (Carol), Yorktown, VA, John (Patricia), Avon, PA and Richard (Linda), Snow Hill, MD; and younger sister Lynn Krieger Hines (Mitchell), Greenbackville, VA; four nephews and three nieces, and two grand-nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Monday, December 3, 2012 at Saint Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 804 High House Rd, Cary, NC 27513. Burial will follow the service at Wake Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 2-4 pm Sunday, December 2, 2012 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 200 SE Maynard Rd, Cary, NC 27511.
