He was born in Troy, NH on March 18, 1919, the son of John F. and Ida (Salminen). Fred grew up in Troy and graduated from Troy High School in 1937. He served in the US Marine Corps during WW II.
He married Helvi L. Lappala on February 11, 1945. They lived in Troy, NH, Townsend, MA, and for 23 years in Rindge, NH.
Fred worked for General Electric in Fitchburg, Mass. as a Stationary Engineer building steam turbines.
He was a member of the Kearsarge Masonic Lodge 81 F&AM and later, Charity Lodge #18 F&AM where he received his 60 year pin. Fred was also a member of the Finnish Club at Saima Park, Fitchburg, Mass. and the Keene Senior Center.
Fred and Helvi moved to Keene in 1989 and then to Maplewood in Westmoreland in 2007.
They made 7 visits to New Zealand between 1976 and 1996.
He is survived by his son John Annala, and his wife Rosalind, of Portland, Maine and Wellington, New Zealand; a grandson Kim Hoskin and granddaughter Simone Hoskin both of New Zealand; and four great grandchildren. Fred’s wife Helvi died in July of this year.
Services for Mr. Annala will be held on Friday, December 6, 2012, 11:00 AM at Fletcher Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 33 Marlboro St., Keene, NH. Calling hours will be held one hour before. Burial will be in the spring.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made in Mr. Fred Annala’s name to the Maplewood Nursing Home Auxiliary, 201 River Road, Westmoreland, NH 03467.
