Irene Van Gundy, 86, of Greeley, died December 14, 2012 at Safe Harbor, Life Care Center, Greeley, Colorado. Irene was born in Sterling, Colorado on October 31, 1926 to Carl and Margaret (Bauer) Maurer.
She graduated from St. Anthony’s High School where she participated in speech and drama. After her children were grown, she moved to Greeley in 1964 to pursue a college education at CSC, now the University of Northern Colorado. She received her BA degree in English education in 1967 and her MA degree in 1971. Irene taught at Greeley West High School for 20 years and was active in speech activities. She also attended many sports events, especially baseball, and was known as “Baseball Mom”. She also supported drama and music events. Throughout her life, she was always interested in helping others. She volunteered at North Colorado Medical Center, and was active in the Greeley Exchange Club. She enjoyed her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Irene is survived by her daughter, Kathy Hlad of Greeley, a son Jim Van Gundy of Mexico. She had 5 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Friday, January 4, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Stoddard Funeral Home. A private family service will be held with inurnment at Sunset Memorial Gardens prior to the Memorial Service.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the baseball program at Greeley West High School or the Alzheimer’s Association in care of Stoddard Funeral Home, 3205 W 28th Street, Greeley, Colorado 80634.
