Bernard Joseph McAndrews, 62, passed away Saturday, December 22, 2012, at a local medical center in Abilene, Tex. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 29, 2012, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Joey Faylona officiating under the direction of Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 5701 Hwy 277 South, Abilene, Tex. Rosary will be held on Friday at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Bernard was born June 10, 1950, to Bartholomew and Frances J. Murphy McAndrews in North Adams, Mass. He graduated from North Adams State College and went on to serve his country in the United States Air Force for four years. After the service, he was employed as a Department of Defense contract specialist at Dyess Air Force Base for 33 years.
Bernard officiated high school football, volleyball, and basketball and coached youth league baseball, softball, and basketball. He was a Girl Scout leader and was very active at Sacred Heart Catholic Church and with Cursillo. Bernard was also a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, and he coordinated the St. Patrick's Day parade in Abilene for 10 years.
He loved to travel across the country with his family, visiting national parks, museums, and battlefields. Bernard was an avid New York Yankees and New York Giants fan.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his sister, Maureen McAndrews; and his son, Patrick McAndrews.
Survivors include his wife, Susan McAndrews of Abilene; son Emory McAndrews and wife Jennifer of San Angelo, Tex.; three daughters, Cora Moellendick and husband Mitch of South Korea, Sarah Ruggiero and husband Paul of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Martha McAndrews of Lewisville, Tex.; and grandchildren Murphy Moellendick, Gregory Moellendick, Caelan McAndrews, and Arno Ruggiero.
