Mrs. Hayes, 94, of Weddington, NC, passed away Tuesday, December 25, 2012 at Carolinas Medical Center – Main.
She was born September 30, 1918 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, one of seven children, to the late Watson Query and Odessa Griffin Query. Mrs. Hayes was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. Having an unselfish and compassionate spirit, she opened her home to all of her family and friends who she loved to care and cook for. Her family has been associated with Matthews United Methodist Church for many years.
The Hayes family will gather to greet friends 12 Noon until 1:00 PM, Friday, December 28, 2012 at McEwen Funeral Service at Sharon. A service to celebrate her life will follow at 1:00 PM in the Chapel with The Reverend Ken Lyon, Senior Minister of Matthews United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Sharon Memorial Park. Family and friends are invited to The Reid House, 134 W. John Street, Matthews, NC immediately following the committal service for a reception.
A Beloved Mother and Grandmother, Mrs. Hayes is survived by her two daughters: Charlotte Hayes Burgess and husband, Ted of Wilmington, NC and Rebecca Hayes Willard and husband, Gene of Weddington, NC and a nephew who she raised, Charles Towery of Clover, SC; two granddaughters: Rebecca Allison Willard of Weddington, NC and Dana Burgess O’Donovan and husband, Kevin of Wilmington, NC; and a great granddaughter, Katharine Hayes O’Donovan of Wilmington, NC and special nephew and niece, John Hovis and his wife, Elizabeth and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Martin L. “Red” Hayes in 1999; a sister, Johnnie Hovis and five brothers, Cliff, Kress, Edward, Leonard and Bert Query.
