Sibyl Cates, 95, of Fouke, AR passed away January 5, 2013 at her home. Mrs. Cates was born September 20, 1917 in Fouke, AR. She taught school in Miller County for 32 years. At age 18 she coached the Championship Fouke Boys' Basketball Team. She was a long-time member and supporter of Boyd Union Church and looked forward to giving the Welcoming Address at Homecoming each year. She was a Silver-Haired Legislator and strong advocate of women exercising their right to vote. Mrs. Cates was past President of the local AARP Chapter and a member of the Texarkana Humane Society Board of Directors, the Arkansas Retired Teachers Association and the Sylverino Cemetery Board of Directors. She was the winner of the Aging Arkansas "My Best Birthday" Essay Contest.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Cates.
Survivors include her daughter, Gayle Cates; her brother, Roscoe Lantrip; her special caregiver nieces--Lacrisha Bryant, Vicki Ramsey, Kacy Frazier, Sue Rea, and Erin Frazier; her special friends--Jeanna Rogers, Butch McKeehan, Danny Leach, Don Wickersham, Gail Goodwin, and Jet and Kathy Thompson; numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews; many former students; and Sketti, Therapy Dog.
Services will be 3 p.m., Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at East Memorial Chapel - Downtown with Rev. Bill Robinson and Phillip Spiros officiating. Burial will be in Sylverino Cemetery under the direction of East Funeral Home - Downtown.
Family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at the funeral home.
