Norton Bruce Young was born August 11, 1926 in Renton, Washington to Ruth Vallery Young and William Wallace Young. He was raised in Seattle, Washington where he attended both elementary school and high school. He was talented as a boy soprano in elementary school where he excelled in doing solo work and sung in several choirs. He is a veteran of both World War II and the Korean War and served in the Navy as a sonar man. In 1950 he married Beatrice and they had a family of three children, Creighton (Helen), Kevin (Jeri) and Vallery (Todd). He completed his Bachelor’s and Master’s degree at the University of Washington and earned both a Master’s degree and P.H.D. in Speech Pathology and Audiology; the later degree at Purdue University. His first job was at the Seattle Hearing and Speech Center, where he worked for a year. The University of Oregon in Eugene hired him and he worked five years there doing teaching, clinical work and outreach work, mostly in the southern part of the state. Soon the Oregon Health and Sciences University in Portland hired him where he worked in the Child Development and Rehabilitation Center the rest of his professional life. He did clinical work, research and teaching and loved the work he did with children and their families as well as the students he taught. He was a member of the American Association of Speech, Language and Hearing and volunteered for a number of years evaluating University Clinics, primarily in Alaska. He also was a member and president of the Oregon Speech and Hearing Association and received “Honors of the Association”. Norton’s great love was the summer home on Hood Canal where he spent weekends and summer with family and ultimately retired there in 1990 where he and his wife spent sixteen wonderful years. In addition to his wife and three children, he leaves behind a brother Lyall (Vesta), six grandchildren, Evan (Jessie), Corrine, Lauren, Shannon, Dustin and Alison, great grandson, Ethan and a nephew, Larry (Cheryl). His beloved dog Muffin also survives him. A Celebration of Life will be held at Young’s Funeral Home in Tigard on Saturday, January 19, 2013 at 2pm.
