Helen R. Smallwood, 91, passed away peacefully on January 15, 2013. She was born to Samuel and Hattie Patton on February 17, 1921 in DeQueen, AR. Helen was the youngest of 11 children. The family moved to Oklahoma when she was very young. She grew up in Marietta and was married there to Lacey H. Smallwood in 1939 and shared 60 loving years together. They soon moved to Oklahoma City and then Del City, where they raised their three girls. Helen eventually began working as a clerk in the Del City Water Department. She became the assistant to the City Manager and worked with several different managers over the years. Helen was acting City Manager for a time before her retirement in 1976. After retirement she continued to work on projects for the betterment of Del City. She was known for her honesty, sweet spirit and loving heart.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband Lacey in 1999, and a daughter, Sharon Pollard in 2005 and Son-in-Law Max Pollard in 1998. She is survived by her daughter LaNita Hukle and husband James Hukle, daughter Mary Haslam and husband Tom Haslam, 4 grandchildren; Terri McGinley and husband Jeff, Lauren Lewis, Jason Haslam and wife Devona, and Jennifer Wolf and husband Danny, 9 great-grandchildren; Mitchell, Jared, Traci, Jalen, Cameron, Brooklyn, Aiden, Henry and Holly, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends who she loved dearly. Helen was a long time member of the Del City Church of Christ and will be missed by her church family.
The family will receive friends on Friday, January 18, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at the funeral home. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 19, 2013 at the Del City Church of Christ, 1901 Vickie Drive., Del City, with interment at Sunny Lane Cemetery. The family wishes to thank the wonderful caregivers at the Wellington Parke Assisted Living, whom she considered family, for all their loving care.
