Carol Sue (Smith) Hopkins entered into rest on January 18, 2013, surrounded by her loving family at the home of her daughter in Augusta, Georgia. She is survived by her daughters, Robin (Kerry) Jones of Augusta and Sarah LeAnn Marruffo of San Diego, California, six grandchildren – Kyle (Elizabeth) Jones, David (Christa) Gott, Cody Jones, Ryan (Ashley) Gott, Sarah Feinerman and Mason Marruffo – and a great-grandson, Levi Jones. Her beloved husband, Norman, preceded her in death. Born December 21, 1936, to Harold T. Smith and Rozene L (Heikes) Smith, Carol graduated from Macomb High School and finished her Bachelor of Arts at the University of Illinois. She retired from CIGNA Insurance of Chicago as a commercial lines underwriter, and ultimately retired to Largo, Florida. Carol was a member of Anona United Methodist Church of Largo, where she sang in both the Sanctuary Choir and the "Choraliers". She had a love of literature, drama and music which led her to many years of acting and directing in the community theater while living in Peoria, Illinois. Later, while living in Largo, Florida, she sang in the show choir "The Suncoast Singers" until just last year. When not traveling, Carol participated in activities with her sorority, Alpha Xi Delta, the DAR and other philanthropic organizations and still found time to enjoy playing bridge and spending time with dear friends. Her love of people was evident in everything that she did. A private memorial will be held for the immediate family in Augusta, Georgia, on Monday, January 21st. A celebration of her life, followed by internment in Oakwood Cemetery, Macomb, will be held in July of this year. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to either Anona UMC (13233 Indian Rocks Road, Largo, FL 33774) or the American Cancer Society.
