Charles Allen, 78, passed away Friday, January 18, 2013 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, January 21, 2013 at Highland Park Presbyterian Church. Burial will be at Resthaven Cemetery at 1:30 p.m.
Charles Glenn Allen was born July 2, 1934 in Woodburn, IA to Glenn and Geraldine (Charles) Allen. On December 21, 1958 Charles was united in marriage to Beverly Jean Harris. He graduated from Woodburn Public High School in 1953 and Iowa State in 1955 with a degree in Dairy Science. Charles served in the Army during the Korean War. Chuck began working at Prairie Farms (Flynn) Dairy in Des Moines and was there for 37 years. As the dairy changed owners/names, he was transferred to the Pevely Dairy in St. Louis as a plant manager, and to the Allen Dairy in Fort Wayne, IN as the General Manager. He was in the dairy business for 45 years and retired on June 1, 2000.
Chuck was a 50 year member of the Gnemeth Masonic Lodge #577 in West Des Moines. Chuck was well known for his “Papa Allen’s Fudge” and he also cooked at the Highland Park Presbyterian Church. Chuck enjoyed umpiring and coaching Highland Park Little League, loved going on fishing trips, and took up more than just an interest in woodworking. He also worked at the Iowa Events Center and the Drake Relays.
Survivors include his loving wife of 54 years, Beverly; children, Deborah (Douglas) Coates, Michael (Shawnie) Allen; grandson, Andrew Bryant; brother, Irvin (Celeste) Allen; sister, Ellen Allen; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Glenna Jean Mutschler.
Memorial contributions may be directed to his church. Visitation will be 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. Monday, at the church, with a Masonic Service at 10:45 a.m.
