Terry Dean Nold peacefully passed away on January 18, 2013 after a heroic battle with cancer. He will be remembered as Switzerland with his firm, stubborn demeanor and a kind and caring heart. Terry was born on a wintery day on December 9, 1952 in Breckingridge Minnesota to parents Georgia and Ronald Nold. The family moved from Minnesota to Oregon when Terry was 8 and permanently resided in Portland. Terry started school at Benson High School but after one year transferred to Roosevelt High School where he later graduated. Terry joined the Army during the Vietnam War. While he did not see any active combat he honorably served his country. It was at The Twilight Room in North Portland that Terry met Lori Pick. While beginning their relationship as friends Terry and Lori’s relationship developed into a beautiful romance. They were married in Portland on February 12, 1982. Terry found work as a warehouse manager with Continental Western where he worked for 15 years. Terry demonstrated his unparalleled loyalty and dedication to his career, as in all things, by diligently working even after receiving the devastating news about his cancer. He worked the week prior to his final surgery refusing to balk his responsibility or the needs of those close to him. Terry was a man who did things on his own terms. He was unwavering in his ethics and values; someone you turned to for sincere advice. When he spoke you listened. He was a caring and sensitive husband; a stern but kind father and a beloved and playful grandpa. Known to many as Pa, his heart did not know the boundary of traditional family roles; if Terry considered you one of his own he made it so. Terry loved crossword puzzles, country music and court TV and his beloved Judge Judy. He loved to cook especially his incomparable fried chicken. Terry always volunteered to do the family laundry where most evenings you could find him in his meticulous “man cave” carefully folding piles of clothes. He would never leave the job undone, no matter how late it got. Terry was creative writing wonderful and sometimes witty poetry. In December 2012 Terry was diagnosed with terminal cancer. He peacefully passed away in the early morning of January 18 as his family slept nearby. He wouldn’t have wanted it any other way: quiet, no fuss. Terry is predeceased by his parents and brother. His memory will be cherished by his wife, Lori Nold, a son Daniel Rian Nold and his menagerie of brother’s and sisters, four grandchildren and many more beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and family. Terry will be missed for his laughter and special humor. He will be missed for his work ethic and dedication. Terry was a man who was counted on and his passing will leave a huge hole in the hearts of many.
