Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Monday, January 28, 2013 at First Baptist Church of Columbus with Dr. James C. Elder, Jr. officiating with a private entombment in Parkhill Cemetery according to Striffler – Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus. The family will receive friends Monday at the conclusion of the service in the fellowship hall of First Baptist Church.
Mr. Brescia was born February 1, 1917 in Columbus, GA the son of the late Joseph and Selethia Mae Robinson Brescia. He was a lifelong resident of Columbus.
Mr. Brescia was currently a realtor with Coldwell Banker, Kennon, Parker, Duncan and Key Realtors in Columbus. He was Realtor of the Year for the year 2011 locally and state wide, lifetime member of Board of Realtors, former president of the Board of Realtors, and Board of Realtors office is named the Billy Brescia Building in his honor. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II with duty stations in Gulfport, MS and at Maxwell Field in Alabama. He began in the shipping department at Archer Mills in 1935, retiring in 1970 as Vice President of distribution, worked part-time in real estate starting in 1947, selling his first home, then going full-time in 1970.
Mr. Brescia was a member of Georgia Association of Realtors Political Action Committee (GARPAC) and Political / Legislative Affairs Committee, co-chair of both from 2010 until 2011, Realtors Extending a Caring Hand Committee, Multiple Listing Service Committee, work with Boy Scouts, Little League Baseball, School Safety Patrol, Columbus Public Safety Board, and American Legion.
Mr. Bescia received Golden Rule Award in Columbus in 1984, Dick McCudden Award for Exceptional Support of the GARPAC in 2000, Columbus Board of Realtors Community Service Award in 2003, appointed GAR director for life in 2006, Billy Brescia Day declared October 3, by then Mayor Bob Poydasheff in 2006, granted emeritus status by National Association of Realtors in 2006, honored with resolution by Georgia House of Representatives in 2009, and lifetime member of Circle of Excellence.
Mr. Brescia was a member of First Baptist Church of Columbus where he was a deacon, and member of Bob Scarbrough Sunday School Class. He was preceded in death by a son, William Childs Brescia.
Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Claudia Childs Brescia; a daughter, Becky Brescia Johnson and her husband, Joe of Columbus; a son, David Charles Brescia and his wife, Debbie of Grant, AL; five grandchildren, Jody Johnson, Jeff Johnson, Mark Johnson and his wife, Amy, David Brescia, and Rebecca Freeman; eight great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to a charity of choice.
