John “Frank” Carter, Jr. of Raleigh, NC died January 26, 2013. Frank was born in Monroe, NC on February 8, 1924; son of the late Eula Mae Crowell Carter and John Frank Carter, Sr. He graduated from Needham Broughton School and served four years in the US Navy in the European Theater during World War II. He graduated from Hardbarger Business College. Frank worked for Norfolk Southern Railroad and retired from Unigard Insurance Company as a Claims Adjuster in 1984 after thirty years of service.
He was an avid sports person, playing soft ball and coaching little league baseball, bowling, playing golf weekly at Raleigh Golf Association with his friends for many years and received many sports trophies and awards over the years. Frank was a most faithful NC State sports fan, ushering at basketball and football games for 50+ years. He was a Charter and oldest member of Raleigh Grass Roots Cribbage Club enjoying friends there, never missing a single tournament in over 39 years.
He was a member at Western Blvd. Presbyterian Church for over 50 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Julius G. “Peanut” and Everett “Cutie”; one sister, Frances Carter Finnell of Roanoke, VA; and his only son, John “Johnny” Frank Carter, III.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 60+ years, Bonnie Jean Buie Carter, originally of Wagram, NC; only daughter, Jean “Jeanne” Marie Tilley Carter; daughter-in-law, Ellen Zwick Carter, all residing in Raleigh, NC. Frank is also survived by his only grandson, John “Benjamin” Tilley and wife, Sarah Gale Johnson Tilley; and great grandson, Henry Owen Tilley, all residing in Cary, NC. Frank also had many nieces, nephews and many, many friends. He will be sorely missed by all those who loved him. He lived a full and colorful life.
Private services will be held at Raleigh Memorial Park.
