Doris Elaine Grantham King, 79, passed away surrounded by the love and affection of her family and friends on January 26, 2013 at Sanitasole Assisted Living Facility on Marco Island, FL. Doris was born to Ruth Elaine Long and ZebZingle Grantham on February 15, 1933 in New Bern, NC. She was preceded in death by her brothers Lamont, Robert and Joseph Grantham of Morehead City, NC. She will be ever so dearly missed by her husband of almost 58 years, Paul Douglas King; daughter Debra Elaine and her husband Carl Overstreet; daughter Donna Kay and her husband Rick Seymour; son Kelly King and his wife Suzette; their eight grandchildren aged 30-15, Peter, Daniel, Devon, Lauren, Ryan, Douglas, Trevor and Christopher; and their grandchildren’s spouses and loved ones, Ryssa, Nan and Drew.
Doris graduated from Morehead City High School in North Carolina and received a business degree from East Carolina University in 1954. She married her high school sweetheart and the love of her life on March 27, 1955. She soon became a legal secretary, a mother of three children and President of the Morehead City Junior Women’s Club. Doris enjoyed designing and making clothes for local charities and events, and she was an excellent cook.
She moved to the Washington, DC suburbs in 1967 where she entered Federal civilian service as a budget analyst for the F-4 aircraft project office, then a financial manager for foreign military sales, business manager for the Sidewinder missile program and lastly an administrator of research and development funds for Naval Aviation. She received many outstanding performance awards in these positions. She was well known for hosting many dinner parties and happy hours for friends, neighbors and business associates.
Doris and Doug retired to Marco Island, FL in 1988 where they continued an active social calendar, including breakfasts at McDonald’s and happy hours with friends and family, boating, fishing and enjoying the beach and pool with their grandchildren.
Doris was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Morehead City, NC, and the Wesley United Methodist Church of Marco Island, FL.
Throughout her life, Doris was a kind and gentle person who lived her life with grace and affection. She was a caring and loving wife, mother,grandmother, and friend.
Friends are invited to join her family at a memorial service celebrating Doris’ life and spirit on January 29, 2013 at 2:00pm at Wesley United Methodist Church, 350 S. Barfield Drive, Marco Island, FL, and at a reception immediately following at their home at 773 Nautilus Court, Marco Island, FL 34145-1917.
