Born in Carteret, New Jersey, a son of the late John and Elizabeth (Balogh) Abaray, he had lived in New Bedford since 1963.
Mr. Abaray served in the US Navy as a Radio Operator and later attended Cambridge School of Radio and TV Broadcasting in New York. He started working as a Radio Announcer in Rome, New York and later worked in various stations around New England including, WBSM, WNBH, WSAR, WJAR and WRKO. He was also a play by play announcer for both Brown University Football and University of Rhode Island Basketball. John loved music and was a member of the choir at Our Lady of Fatima Church. He was also a member of the American Legion in Acushnet.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Rachelle St. Pierre and her husband Claude of Westport and Regina Araujo and her husband Sil of Fall River; three sons, John “Johnny” Abaray Jr. and his wife Sue of Acushnet, Blaine Abaray and his wife Donna of Acushnet and Mark Abaray of New Bedford and seven grandchildren.
His funeral will be held Friday, February 8, 2013 at 9 AM from the ROCK Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford, followed by his funeral mass at 10 AM in Our Lady of Fatima Church, 4256 Acushnet Ave., New Bedford. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visiting hours, Thursday 4-7 PM.
